This blog is dedicated to automobile sale and driver trends in USA. Our goal is to produce easy to consume single source of information that is currently scattered in multiple places. The car and driver historical trend data presented is compiled from major newspapers, governmental and partner sites that report these trends on a regular basis. Hopefully you will find it interesting and useful.
The chart below shows the number of vehicles sold from Jan - Oct 2014 by type of vehicle. This vehicle sale trend data shows that there are 5 main categories of vehicles sold - small cars, medium cars, pickups trucks, crossovers and mini-vans. All other categories of vehicles sold cater to niche or smaller segments.
The top 20 vehicles sold are shown in the chart below. It is easy to see from this auto sales trend data that the US brands dominate the light truck sale segments while the Japanese brands dominate the car sale segments.
The total number of registered vehicle data is collected periodically by the government agencies. The last available vehicle registration data is show below. As you can see the biggest states e.g. CA, TX, NY etc. are at the top of the list. The total number of registered vehicles at the time was 253,639,386 (i.e. ~254M)

As you can see the biggest states e.g. CA, TX, NY etc. are at the top of the list. The total number of registered vehicles at the time was 253,639,386 (i.e. ~254M)

Similar to the total number of registered vehicles, the last available total number of registered drivers data is also from 2012. A very similar story here too i.e. larger states have more registered drivers e.g. CA, TX, NY etc.The total number of registered drivers at the time was 211,814,830 (i.e. ~212M)

A closer look reveals that majority of states have registered driver to registered vehicle ratio between 0.7 - 0.9. States with registered driver to registered vehicle higher than 0.90 are DC, NY, MD, MA, MS, CT, AZ, UT and MI, while states with registered driver to registered vehicle ratio less than 0.70 are OK, AK, ID, MN, IA, ND, SD, WY and MT.

Below is a split of registered drivers by age. As you can see, registered drivers are fairly equally spread between the ages of 20 and 64 years. The number of registered drivers begin to fall off after the age 65 which seems logical due to people retiring (fewer people need to commute) and avg life expectancy of ~69 years (fewer people drivers available).
